The way I've been doing it so far is I block in the shape first with usually the main shadow colors, then I just carve out the light side planes and I end up with a very basic and admittedly messy, block in. It feels a lot like sculpting. Once that looks right, I then blend shapes where appropriate, clean up edges, and then add some of the nuances in the rest of the hour I usually spend on these.
Nic, how do you start you're digipaints? Mine always look scribbly.
